What
happens at the records appointment?
1. Study Models - impressions or moulds of your teeth.
2. Photographic Records.
3. Separators – used to create space between molar
teeth.
Study Model Process
First of all we try in metal trays to make sure they
fit into your mouth. These trays are filled with a soft,
putty like material and then placed into your mouth
to set so we have a duplicate of your teeth. Whilst
the impression material is in your mouth you may feel
like you are gagging and it sometimes feels like the
impression material is going to run down the back of
your throat but it doesn’t.
If you feel this sensation it is important that you
do not panic. Leaning forward and breathing through
your nose can help. It takes approximately 1 minute
for the impression material to set before we can remove
it.
Photographic Records - We take 6 photographs
in total.
3 Extra Oral Photographs which consist of -
• 1 frontal view no smile
• 1 frontal view with smile
• 1 side view on left
3 Intra Oral photographs which consist of –
• 1 frontal view
• 1 side view on left
• 1 side view on right
Separators
These are small nylon or rubber rings which are placed
around the contact points between teeth. They are stretched
around where the teeth contact and contract back to
push the teeth apart and make room for the orthodontic
molar bands that will fit around your back molar teeth.
When separating the teeth can be sore to touch or bite
on for about 2 days and will lose their soreness as
they move apart.
Panadol or Nurofen may be necessary.
Rules for Separators:
• Eat normally but avoid sticky foods such as
toffees, minties and chewing gums that might dislodge
the separators.
• If separators are lost and it is only 1 –2
days before your appointment then do not worry about
coming in to have them replaced. Rarely more than 2-3
out of the 6-8 inserted are lost and if more then ring
to discuss replacement. It may be possible to push back
into place if separators are partially dislodged.
• Brush normally but do not floss between the
separated teeth.
