Loose bracket or band
If a bracket or a band comes loose or off:
• Telephone our surgery to report this.
• Depending on the position or number of brackets lost, an early appointment may be needed to replace these. The receptionist can advise you if you need to be seen.

End of wire against cheeks
• During treatment, particularly in the early stages as the teeth level, the archwires may protrude from the ends of the tubes and rub against the cheeks. Should this occur, place wax on the ends or bend the end away from the cheek with a blunt object (e.g.. End of teaspoon).
• If scratching continues, ring for an appointment so the end may be cut off.

Roughness from the braces
• Any rough areas on the braces should be covered by wax as instructed and the wax replaced as necessary.

Sore or ulcerated areas
Braces can rub against the soft tissues and this can be minimised or avoided by:
• Using the wax provided.
• Warm salt water/anti-ulcer rinse 2-3 times per day if ulcerated.
• Good fluid consumption and keeping lips moist with Vaseline.

• If any rough areas persist – please call our surgery for an adjustment appointment. Rubbing usually disappears after the first five days as the mouth adapts.

Wires out of molar tubes
• During treatment the wire can work its way out or be sprung out of the end tubes. This is most likely during the early part of treatment when in light wires. If this occurs try to replace the wire in the tube or if this is not possible tuck the wire under the hook on the outside of the last molar band to avoid digging into the cheek.
• Ring the surgery as soon as possible if you are experiencing problems.

Broken arch wires
• This seldom occurs and is usually wire failure due to eating foods that are hard or sticky.
• The broken wire can painfully press against your tongue or cheek. In an emergency, if you cannot contact the surgery cut the wire free against the next bracket.
