Twin Block Appliances – Functional Plates

When you ring the surgery to make your appointments the receptionist will –

• Confirm type of treatment you are proceeding with.
• Confirm cost of treatment and confirm your initial deposit which is required the day you commence your treatment.

Appointments will then be scheduled for –

Records
At this appointment we will take study models (impressions) of your teeth if we have not already taken them prior. We will also take photographic records. This appointment will take approximately 15 minutes. We then need to see you in 2 weeks time to insert the Twin Block Appliances. We allow 2 weeks as it is a complicated appliance for our orthodontic technician to make.

Appliance Insert
At this appointment the doctor will insert the appliance into your mouth. This appointment will take approximately 15 minutes. Sometimes there may be rough areas which may need to be smoothed down to make wearing a little more comfortable. Initially the appliance will feel very bulky in your mouth and you may feel like you can not close your lips together.

You may also have a larger flow of saliva than normal to begin with. Your speech may be affected initially but the more you can talk the quicker you will adjust to the changes. Patience and perseverance is the key to success. Allow 1 – 2 weeks for the above possible symptoms to subside. Once the appliance has been inserted the doctor will schedule appointments at approximately 6 – 8 week intervals. Never leave the surgery without making a follow up appointment.
