Teeth
with braces need special care!
Fixed appliances (braces) consist of brackets
glued to the outer surface of teeth and bands that are
cemented around the molar teeth. These are joined together
by wires that provide forces to move the teeth into
their correct positions. Other forces may be applied
through elastics or headgear.
The initial stage:
Forces from the wire cause initial tooth soreness usually
starting 3-6 hours after braces are attached. This soreness
is worse for the first 48 hours after which the tenderness
on closing and biting slowly disappears. To minimize
discomfort during this period, food should be cut up
finely and swallowed with less chewing, although we
do suggest a normal diet.
Pain relief tablets such as Panadol / Nurofen should
be given as instructed.
Do not worry as things will quickly improve and this
will be the hardest stage of your orthodontics.
Important Facts you should know about your braces –
Oral Hygiene
• The importance of good oral hygiene cannot be
overstressed. The dental assistant will have discussed
this with you and given you a brochure.
• It is your responsibility to keep your teeth
clean. See our section on brushing
with braces for more details.
Diet
• Avoid hard foods which loosen brackets and bend
wires.
• DO NOT EAT sugary, sticky, chewy foods such
as: Lollies, chocolates and muesli bars.
• DO NOT DRINK soft drinks such as: Coke, Fanta
and lemonade. We recommend that you drink plenty of
water and natural fruit juices.
• BE AWARE of hard, crunchy foods such as: apples,
carrots, corn on the cob, steak and pork crackling and
Bones (e.g. chicken wings, chop bones).
• BE AWARE of hard items such
as: Fingernails – avoid biting & chewing your
nails. Don’t chew on pens and pencils.
The items above are very hard and, if chewed on, can
cause brackets to come off your teeth. If you want your
treatment to go smoothly and quickly, you will take
these things into consideration.
